Thank you!

Parents & Families,

Thank you for working with us to make sure our Fall Festival was a success! We sold a lot of raffle tickets for the gas card this year. The money from that will go to purchase great resources and other items we need in our classrooms throughout the school year.

Windsor Construction,LLC owned by Larry Smith in Bowling Green donated the $100. gas card and to him we owe a huge thanks!

I also want to thank you for sending items for our Halloween party. As always, the students enjoyed the treats!

I am still in need of volunteers. If you are willing to help out in the classroom listening to students read, helping with AR, working one on one with students, copying, cutting, etc. Just let me know a schedule or day that works for you. I would LOVE to have your help and the students would certainly benefit by having more helping hands!

In the next few weeks we will be studying Settlement and Exploration in Social Studies. If you have any items we could use for art projects, please send them in. We could use feathers, clay, material, beads, leather strips, etc.

Thank you again for allowing me the opportunity to teach your children! They are a great group of students.

FALL FESTIVAL

10-20-09
Dear Families,

Fall Festival is this coming Friday. Each grade level is responsible for providing a basket to put in the auction. This year the second grade classes have chosen CHANDLER’S SPIRIT as the theme for our basket. We thought this would be a great way to promote Chandler’s School Spirit by filling the basket with all things Chandler’s. The cheerleaders are currently selling t-shirts and pullovers which would be great items to place in the basket. We realize that you may not want to purchase items alone, but if you would be willing to send in a few dollars to go toward the purchase of these items your help would be greatly appreciated. Other items we hope you may include are basketball season tickets for a family, Chandler’s seat cushions, anything purple and white which could include candles or bows. Cookbooks from community churches or organizations would also be great to include in our Chandler’s Spirit Basket! As of today, we have not received anything for our basket.
Second grade is also selling chances to win a $100 gas card! You may have seen raffle tickets in your child’s take-home folders. Chances for the gas card raffle tickets are 1 for $1.00 or 6 for $5.00. This was a HUGE fundraiser last year. It allowed the second grade classes to purchase items for our classrooms and students throughout the school year. Please help us in promoting the sale of these raffle tickets. It is your child who will benefit from the money collected. Also, the person selling the most tickets and the winning ticket will each get a cash prize. All proceeds from these raffle ticket sales go directly to the second grade classes. The money is not divided among all classes as it is our primary fundraiser.
On Friday, during fall festival, we will also have a lollipop tree set up as our game. We are in need of volunteers to run this booth as we will also be selling raffle tickets the night of fall festival.
If there are any other ways in which you can help to make our fall festival a success we would love to have your help!
Call us, email us or send notes anytime this week to let us know how you can help. Our planning times are from 1:15 – 2:05 daily through Thursday. The school’s phone number is 532-4139.
You may contact us by email: kim.elms@logan.kyschools.us or tina.campbell@logan.kyschools.us

Off to a good start!

Families,

We are off to a good start to this school year! Just a few reminders:

Homework
Please look in your child's take home folder daily for notes, completed work, homework to be completed and homework log. Homework is assigned Monday through Thursday. Please sign the homework log daily including any comments you wish to make about your child's progress. This is an excellent home-to-school communication log to ensure we are working toward common goals set for your child's education. The completed homework log is due each Friday morning.

Classroom Temperature
Our classroom temperature is pretty cool. Please send a light jacket or sweatshirt with your child to school. Many of the students complain about being cold.

Breakfast
Many of the students begin asking "Is it time for lunch?" around 10:00. Please see that your child is eating breakfast before coming to class. It is said to be the most important meal of the day!

Progress Reports
Progress reports go home this week! It's hard to believe we've been in school long enough for this to happen, yet it is that time already!
BEAR EXPECTATIONS

In an effort to promote positive classroom and school-wide behaviors, our school has adopted the following as our behavioral expectations for all students:

Be Responsible
Engage in Learning
Achieve Academic Excellence
Respect Everyone
Stay Safe
Afternoon Dismissal
Student safety is of utmost importance to us!
Students will be walked to the buses by a teacher from their grade level. Car riders will be walked to the lunchroom by a teacher from their grade level. As a safety precaution, students who are car riders are to walk to the lunchroom and wait to be dismissed from faculty on duty. Students are not to meet their parents in the lobby and leave from there. Once in the lunchroom, students are to quietly sit at their assigned tables and wait to be called as parents are available to pick them up. If you pick your child up in the car-rider line, please watch faculty on duty for cues to pull forward. Our goal is to load children into the cars as safely and efficiently as possible. Always pull forward so we can load several cars at once.

Welcome Back!!

Welcome back from Spring Break! I hope everyone had a restful, or eventful (whichever you were in most need of) break!
We are working to get back into a routine, which includes remembering to bring backpacks, take-home folders , eating breakfast before coming to class and getting enough sleep. There were a lot of sleepy, hungry boys and girls this morning. The question"When is lunch?" was asked several times. Please make sure your child eats breakfast every morning before coming to class and gets a good night's rest.

Reading
In reading this week we will be focusing on:
Phonics : Homophones, Multi-syllable words, and words with -ing endings
Comprehension: Summarizing, Understanding Chapter Books, and Visualizing
Vocabulary: High Frequency Words and Puns
Fluency: Decodable Text, and Leveled Readers

As you are well aware, testing is fast approaching. It is so important that you take time to read with your child to reinforce all of these skills. Ask questions as your child reads to increase sentence and passage comprehension. Make sure your child sounds words out. It's so easy to just tell them what the word is, but they have learned SO much this year and are well-equipped to chunk sounds to read the word. It just takes a lot of patience (and time) sometimes. Hang in there! The end result is the reward!!

Math -
We are learning about measurement.
The students find this to be a fun unit. Dads, this is where you can be a GREAT HELP! Get your measuring tape out and measure cabinet doors, toy boxes, desks, couches...anything!
Moms, let the children help in the kitchen. Let them help you measure ingredients as you cook. If the ingredients are too expensive, let them practice with water. If you have a food scale in your kitchen, or bathroom scales, these would also be great tools to teach measurement.
We are specifically talking about:
Weight: - how heavy an object is
Length - the distance from one end of ab object to the other end
Capacity- the amount a container can hold
So you can see there are many ways in which to incorporate real-world lessons into your every day life! It helps the students make connections to what we talk about in class if they have exposure at home.

Writing
In writing we continue working on personal narratives. It would be great if you could get your photo albums out to look through with your child. This might spark some memory of a memorable day for your child to write about.

Spelling
Our spelling list this week consists of homophones ( words that sound the same, have a different meaning, and are spelled differently)
Your child will need to know the meaning of the words for the spelling test.
The list is as follows:
tail tale
plain plane
sail sale
too to two
whole hole
threw through

VOLUNTEERS WANTED!!!
If you have completed all of your paperwork and are willing to volunteer, please send me a note letting me know when you are available. I could use your help in so many ways! I would love to let you put your talents to good use.

World Book

www.worldbook.com
You can access this from your home by using the user name and password located inside your child's take-home folder. It's a great resource!

Second Grade Success March 2 - 6

Reading -
This week we will be reading the story Carousel. We will be making judgments on what we read based on our own personal experiences.

Our targeted skills this week are:

Phonics: Sound of y at the end of longer words; the prefix un-
Comprehension: Making Judgments
Vocabulary: High-Frequency words; homophones ( words that sound the same, but
have different meanings. Some examples of homopohones are : hair,
hare; dear, deer; know, no; flower, flour)
Fluency: Decodable Text; Leveled Readers

Please encourage your child to read at least 20 minutes each night. Ask questions to increase comprehension. If your child does not understand what they have read, have them re-read what they have read. This is a comprehension skill we work on in class.
Also, when you ask questions, have your child answer in complete sentences. This will encourage them to give more details. Ask Who?, What?, When?, Where?, Why?, and How?

I'm so excited to see many students picking up chapter books to read and sticking with them until they've finished them! Several students are now moving toward chapter books and are really developing the love of reading! WAY TO GO!!
Math
We are continuing with factions, addition, subtraction, and money. These are skills your child will use for the rest of their lives. Please help us to show them how these skills are used in the real world. We make real-world connections as we teach, but if you also help them to see how you use these skills it will become more real for them. The fractions we concentrate on in second grade are a whole, 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4.
Continue to use addition and subtraction flash cards to increase speed and accuracy with basic math facts.
Allow students to count the change in the car or from your pockets.
Encourage your child to look at an analog clock to tell the time.
Encourage your child to look at the calendar to tell you the date.

Writing
We are working on finishing up past writing pieces. We are trying to improve our writing skills by adding details to our writing, being more clear about what we are telling the reader, and we are also working on neatness. These are things you can work on at home with your child too.
We will soon begin working on personal narratives. These are pieces about one specific event. You might want to help your child decide something to write about. It would be something that would be very memorable to them like losing their first tooth, or another special event in their life. You may have pictures and stories to share with them to help them with the details.

Spelling
this week's spelling words are:
puppy, funny, baby, silly lucky, many, happy, only, very, lady, furry, angry
These words connect to our phonics skill for the week.

Reminders:
March 6th - Doughnuts for Dads
March 23 - April 3 - Spring Break
As the weather improves, we will be going outside more for outdoor p.e. Please make sure your child has some kind of jacket or sweatshirt to wear on cooler days.
A good breakfast is the best way to start the day! Lunch is at 11:20. Several students are hungry long before lunchtime. Please encourage your child to eat a good breakfast before they get to the classroom.
Testing is quickly approaching! Work daily with your child to ensure they are ready and have the skills they need to be successful!
